This project is a Catholic Church in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, situated on a 2,200-sq.m. lot. The 680-sq.m. structure incorporates contemporary ecclesiastical design and expressionist principles, utilizing a combination of reinforced concrete, glass, and steel. The exterior features board-formed concrete finishes and large-format glazing that allows natural light to penetrate the nave.
The primary architectural feature is the roof, which executes the “Crown of Thorns” concept. This is achieved through a complex, interlocking steel space frame that rises into a central spire topped with a cross. The geometry consists of repetitive, angular steel members that overlap to create a woven, protective shell over the sanctuary.
Inside, the structural grid of the roof is visible, framing triangular skylights. The ceiling is finished with gold-leaf mosaics and icons depicting biblical figures, integrated into the geometric facets of the interior shell. A circular, multi-tiered corona is suspended beneath the central apex, echoing the crown motif. The floor is finished in polished marble with geometric patterns that align with the building’s central axis, leading toward a minimalist altar backed by a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. Adjacent to the main structure stands a detached concrete bell tower with a matching steel lattice facade.
